We want to please you: writing is not a gift but a skill that can be cultivated. Everyone can learn to draw or sing even in the absence of sense of color or good ear for music. You may say: “But what about the talent?” Indeed, some people are endowed with a talent for writing, but it’s not enough to become a writer.
Everyone is advised to have day-in and day-out practice to write better. But who has time to cut teeth on it? Nowadays, time has become too valuable resource to spend it on practice. We understand that, so we have made 6 effective methods that will help you to improve your writing skills as soon as possible.
It’s impossible to succeed in writing without daily practice. The most important rule is to write daily. Well, it’s fairly simple: how to learn to swim? By swimming! What’s the use of knowing the theory without practice? “Lie down on your stomach, relax, stretch your arms forward and make alternating strokes”. Will this theory help you to swim?
No one has written a masterpiece in one set. To start with, get into the habit of writing every day. There is an excellent technique that will help you develop your talent. It’s called “morning pages” or free writing. The point is you need to write 3 handwritten pages immediately after you’ve woken up. On average, it should take 20-30 minutes. All you have to do is just to pass your hand over the paper and write down everything that is popping into your head. You can find detailed instructions in “The Artist’s way” by Julia Cameron. If it puzzles you at first you don’t have any ideas what are you going to write about, use one of the suggested topics:
- What life has been like if I was a doctor?
- What would I do if I had a million dollars?
- What is my happiest memory of the past 3 years?
- I’m grateful for …
- What could I teach a stranger?
- What if I open a restaurant? What will it be? What’s on the menu?
- What would I change, if I could go back in time?
As you can see, the topic can be anything: from the banal and ridiculous to serious and philosophical. Even if you are ashamed of you thoughts, just keep writing. First of all, no one except you will read your diary. And second, never reread what you’ve written.
Regular reading is another basic rule. Make a habit of reading at least one book a week. Just think, you’ll read about 52 new books in a year! Challenge yourself. You don’t have to read only fiction literature. Alternate it with the practical ones. Books on journalism, psychology or any other topic you are interested in will come in handy. Read your favorite blogs or columns to be in trend.
3.Create your ideal reader
Before you start writing, imagine your reader. How can you help him? Is the main idea will be clear enough? Answer these questions and you will understand what to do next.
4.Reread with a fresh mind
Did you write a chapter? Get up, walk around, turn your attention to something else. Don’t return to your text for a while. Let your eyes and brain have a rest. Tired eyes will never notice the logic error or misprint. Get back to work after good relax.
5.Remove the surplus
If long descriptions is not your writer’s trick exclude them from your text. This is particularly relevant for those who write for the Internet audience. Internet users don’t read the web text. They scan it and stop at the key phrases. That’s why lengthy descriptions scare readers. To learn more how to write articles for blogs and online publications welcome to our post.
6.Write as you speak
Listen to what your inner voice dictates you. Write in simple language, don’t try deliberately to make your writing style better. Since novice writers think some words are too simple and short, they replace them with complicated lexis ones to sound smarter. Don’t do this. If you want to say about the rain, don’t write “precipitations”. Don’t overuse the Internet searching for ink-horn terms or brilliant synonyms.
Work on your writing style. Remember, all comes with experience. Just for fun, compare the first and last article of any well-known blogger. You’ll see a tremendous difference as if they were written by two completely different people. So don’t hesitate and just write! This is the only smart way to be a good writer.
