A couple of years back, my friend Alex has opened a\u00a0repair shop. He’s good at his job, and his income more than allows him to live as he wants to. But the only way for you to find out he exists is via the word of mouth \u2014 Alex sees computers as arcane\u00a0devices, that channel the mystic power of Facebook and online gaming.<\/p>\n

When I offered to help him represent his business on the Web, Alex frowned and said that it’s way too complicated. He said he’d have to make a website, locate it somewhere and advertise it somehow\u00a0\u2014 all of which costs a lot of money and is not worth it at all.<\/p>\n

That’s how I had the idea to write a step-by-step manual on how to create a website for a small business on a shoe-string budget, fast and without any coding.<\/p>\n

Step 1. Let’s set our goals<\/span><\/h2>\n

Theory<\/span><\/h3>\n

You can’t make a website if you do not know why do you need one. Business websites can be usually divided in three types.<\/p>\n

Business card.\u00a0<\/strong>Business cards are static, which means the all the data is uploaded to the website during its creation and rarely updates. This is a good solution for companies that are working locally \u2014 repair shops, barber shops, etc. Business cards are more for representation, but if you promote\u00a0 your website correctly, they can become a source of new clients. If you want to create and print your own business cards free with Adobe Express<\/a>, it\u2019s a simple and effective way to design professional cards that represent your brand well without extra cost or hassle.<\/p>\n

\"Business<\/a>Blogs<\/strong>. Blogs develop on the previous idea. If the business-card website if completely static, blog also has a dynamic page that lists the latest news and other contemporary materials. This one is good for businesses that have time to talk to their clients.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Corporate<\/a><\/p>\n

Online shop<\/b>. Online shop\u00a0is a website where you can buy something directly. Usually, online shops\u00a0also have a blog and a zone where you can review their goods and discuss them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Online<\/a><\/p>\n

WordPress works equally all for all three goals, so that’s what I recommend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Practice<\/span><\/h3>\n

For this example I will be making a business card website with a small blog.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 2. Choosing a hosting<\/span><\/h2>\n

Theory<\/span><\/h3>\n

Hosting is a computer where the files of the website are located. They can be kept on your personal PC too, but as we have proven earlier \u2014 it’s way too inconvinient<\/a>. Any hosting company will provide you with something that is faster, more reliable and cheaper.<\/p>\n

You can get hosting for free \u2014 there are quite a lot of website constructors that will provide with this service, like WIX. Or even simply free hostings, like WordPress.com. But in that case your website will have ads placed by the website constructor. And you’ll have to pay a monthly fee for their removal.<\/div> <\/p>\n

On this stage, almost any hosting plan will suit you \u2014 your website won’t have many visitor and WordPress is very well-optimized. But I recommend you to buy a hosting with some room for growth. This way your website will handle the peak loads well.<\/p>\n

Another important moment is to have an automated CMS installer on the hosting. For example, Softaculous can install WordPress in 3 minutes without any hassle.<\/p>\n

Practice<\/span><\/h3>\n

For this website I’ll be using Unihost’s plan U-Drive<\/a>. I could do it with U-Ride too, but on U-Drive I have some room for experimentation. I’m buying an annual plan, which puts the cost of the website at $8.40 per month.<\/p>\n

We’ll be buying the hosting once we have chosen a domain.<\/p>\n

Step 3. Choosing a domain name<\/span><\/h2>\n

Theory<\/h3>\n

Domain name is an address you put into your browser in order to access a website. For example, unihost.com. Here, .com is a domain zone \u2014 something like a mail index. And unihost is a unique part of the address, like your house and apartment\u00a0number.<\/span><\/p>\n

Domain name should be short, relevant and memorable.<\/p>\n

The price for the domain depends on three factors:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Domain zone. Each domain zone has its own pricing \u2014 some are completely free, like .tk. But i.e. .na will cost you $5000 per year.<\/li>\n
  2. Premiality. Some domains are so much better, that the owner of the zone jacks up the price just because he can. For example, a domain in .nyc will cost you $30, but autoshop.nyc is up to $35000<\/span>.<\/li>\n
  3. Domain length. Even non-premium domains that are four symbols or shorter have higher prices than the longer ones.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For small business I highly recommend the national domain zones\u00a0\u2014 .uk, .de etc. They are usually cheaper and let people see where you located immediately. But there’s nothing wrong with .com either, so if you want to\u00a0\u2014 go for it!<\/p>\n

    Practice<\/span><\/h3>\n

    We won’t be able to handle a premium domain\u00a0\u2014 that’s for sure. But we will be using the .com zone for demonstration purposes.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Go to\u00a0https:\/\/unihost.com\/cpanel-whm\/<\/a><\/span>.\"Choosing<\/a><\/li>\n
    2. Click Host Your Site<\/em>\u00a0under the hosting plan you’ve chosen.<\/li>\n
    3. You’ll see a page where you can choose a domain. Enter the one you’ve chosen \u2014 in our case it’s myabsolutelytestdomain.com<\/em>.\"Choosing<\/a><\/li>\n
    4. Check\u00a0I want to register this domain<\/em>\u00a0and see that it’s available for registration.<\/li>\n
    5. Click\u00a0Continue<\/em>.<\/li>\n
    6. Verify your order. If it’s correct, click Checkout<\/em>.\"Verifying<\/a><\/li>\n
    7. ClickDon’t have a Unihost account? Create it now!<\/em><\/li>\n
    8. Fill in the form.\"Registration<\/a><\/li>\n
    9. Click\u00a0Create New Account and Continue<\/em>.<\/li>\n
    10. Fill in the contact details\u00a0for the domain registration.\"Domain<\/a><\/li>\n
    11. Click\u00a0Next<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    12. Choose the payment method and click\u00a0Continue<\/em>.<\/li>\n
    13. Complete the payment. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      From this moment on, you already have a website. Now all you have to do it set it up and fill in with data.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Step 4.\u00a0CMS Installation<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Theory<\/span><\/h3>\n

      Once you payment has been cleared, you’ll receive an e-mail with cPanel login data. From there you can manage your hosting, databases and CMS.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Practice<\/span><\/h3>\n

      We’ll install\u00a0Wordpress through\u00a0Softaculous \u2014 it’s easier, faster and we won’t have to deal with databases.<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Log into cPanel.\u00a0\"cPanel<\/a><\/li>\n
      2. Click on WordPress\u00a0<\/em>in the Softaculous App Installer<\/em> tab at the bottom of the page.\"Wordpress<\/a><\/li>\n
      3. Click Install Now<\/em>.\"Wordpress<\/a><\/li>\n
      4. Under Site Settings<\/em> enter the Site Name<\/em> and Site Description<\/em>. They will appear later in the header of your website.\"Setting<\/a><\/li>\n
      5. Under the Admin Account,\u00a0<\/em>enter the admin username and password, as well as the emergency contact e-mail. Save the username and password – you will need them to access your website’s control panel.\"Softaculous<\/a><\/li>\n
      6. Once you are done, click Install<\/em> at the bottom of the page.<\/li>\n
      7. After the installation is over, click on the Administrative URL link to go to the Dashboard:\"Installation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Step 5. Theme installation<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Theory<\/span><\/h3>\n

        Right after the installation, you won’t have a proper website – only a template. And you’ll have to make this template fit your demands. To begin with, let’s install the theme.<\/p>\n

        Practice<\/h3>\n

        By default, the Twenty Seventeen theme is installed. The website looks like this:

        But I want to use another theme. Therefore:<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Click\u00a0Appearance<\/em>\u00a0in the left sidebar of the Dashboard.\"Changing<\/a><\/li>\n
        2. Click\u00a0Themes<\/em>.<\/li>\n
        3. Click Add new<\/em>.<\/li>\n
        4. Look for a theme you like. I like\u00a0Sydney<\/span> \u2014 it has an embedded page constructor and top-level menu.\"\u0422\u0435\u043c\u0430<\/a><\/li>\n
        5. Hover your cursor over it and click\u00a0Install<\/em>.
          \n<\/a>           \"Changing<\/a><\/li>\n
        6. Wait, until the installation is finished and click\u00a0Activate<\/em>.\"Changing<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Now your website looks like this:\"Sydney<\/a><\/p>\n

          Step 6. Installing plugins for a theme<\/span><\/h2>\n

          Theory<\/span><\/h3>\n

          Some themes need plugins to work correctly. Plugins are the add-ons to the CMS that add new functions or change the way the old ones work.<\/p>\n

          Practice<\/span><\/h3>\n

          Syndey needs two plugins\u00a0\u2014 PageBuilder \u043e\u0442 SiteOrigin<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0Sydney Toolbox<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0Let’s install them.<\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Click\u00a0Begin installing plugins<\/span><\/em>\u00a0on top of the Dashboard.\"\u0423\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/a><\/li>\n
          2. You’ll see a page with links to the plugins. Click\u00a0Install<\/span><\/em>\u00a0under one of them.\u00a0\"\u0423\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/a><\/li>\n
          3. Wait until the plugin installation is over and click\u00a0Return to Required Plugins Installer<\/em>.\u00a0\"Installing<\/a><\/li>\n
          4. Repeat this with the second plugin.<\/span><\/li>\n
          5. Click\u00a0Activate<\/em>\u00a0under one of them.\u00a0\"\u0423\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/a><\/li>\n
          6. Click\u00a0Activate<\/em>\u00a0under the other one.<\/span><\/li>\n
          7. Click\u00a0Return to Dashboard<\/em>.\"\u0423\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Step 7. Theme setup<\/h2>\n

            Now the theme is installed.\u00a0Let’s set it up.<\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Click Appearance<\/em> on the left sidebar of the Dasboard.<\/li>\n
            2. Click\u00a0Customize<\/i>. \u00a0\"Customize<\/a><\/li>\n
            3. You’ll see your website’s main page with an additional menu to the left.\"Customization<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Let’s customize the header.<\/span><\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Click\u00a0Header area<\/em>.\"Header<\/a>
                \n<\/a><\/li>\n
              2. Click\u00a0Header slider<\/em>\u00a0to setup the slider on the main page.\"Header<\/a><\/li>\n
              3. Under Slider speed<\/em> you can choose how fast will the images change in milliseconds (1000 ms = 1s). Also, you can stop the text slider and make the text the same on all the images.\"Slider<\/a><\/li>\n
              4. Click\u00a0Change image<\/em>\u00a0under the first image.\"Change<\/a><\/li>\n
              5. Choose an image from the website library or upload\u00a0a new one.\"Choose<\/a><\/li>\n
              6. Click\u00a0Choose Image<\/em>\u00a0in the lower right.<\/li>\n
              7. Write a headline and the subheadline for the slider.\"Write<\/a><\/li>\n
              8. Do the same for all the other slides. If you do not have enough images \u2014 just remove the standard ones from the rotation.<\/span><\/li>\n
              9. Change the action button text. This button scrolls the header down and shows the user your actual main page.\"Change<\/a><\/li>\n
              10. Click the arrow in the upper left.<\/li>\n
              11. Click Save and Publish<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Now let’s setup headers for other pages.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. Click on the\u00a0Header Type<\/em>.\"Change<\/a><\/li>\n
                2. Under\u00a0Site header type<\/em>\u00a0check\u00a0Image<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Video<\/em>. Full screen slider is way too big to show it anywhere except for the main page.\"Select<\/a><\/li>\n
                3. Click the arrow in the upper left.<\/li>\n
                4. Click Header Media <\/em>to change what media is shown in the header of the other pages.\"Header<\/a><\/li>\n
                5. In order to put your video in the header:<\/span>\n
                    \n
                  1. For Youtube video past the link to the video under Or, enter a YouTube URL.\"Youtube<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n
                  2. For local video, click Select Video<\/em>\u00a0and choose a file from the WordPress library or upload a new one.
                    \n<\/a><\/li>\n
                  3. You’ll still need to setup a header image – it will be shown before the video is loaded.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
                  4. <\/li>\n
                  5. Click on Hide Image<\/em> to remove a placeholder.\"Hide<\/a><\/li>\n
                  6. <\/li>\n
                  7. Click on\u00a0Add New Image.<\/em>\u00a0\"Add<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
                  8. <\/li>\n
                  9. Choose an image from the library or upload a new one. The preferred aspect ratio is 16:9.
                    \n<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
                  10. <\/li>\n
                  11. Click\u00a0Select and Crop<\/em>.<\/li>\n
                  12. <\/li>\n
                  13. Click Crop<\/em>.<\/li>\n
                  14. <\/li>\n
                  15. Edit the header height if you want to show more or less of the image. You can also disable the dark overlay.\"Change<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
                  16. Click the arrow in the upper left.<\/li>\n
                  17. Click Save and Publish<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    Now, I want to move the menu to the middle of the page.<\/span><\/p>\n

                      \n
                    1. Click Menu style<\/em>.
                      \n                      \"Change<\/a><\/li>\n
                    2. Check the\u00a0Centered\u00a0(menu and site logo)<\/em>.\"Set<\/a> \"menu\"<\/a><\/li>\n
                    3. Click the arrow in the upper left.<\/li>\n
                    4. Click it again.<\/li>\n
                    5. Click Save and Publish<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      Now I want to add a site logo and an image in the browser’s tab.<\/p>\n

                        \n
                      1. Click\u00a0Site title\/tagline\/logo<\/em>.\"Change<\/a><\/li>\n
                      2. If you don’t have a logo \u2014 here you can change your site title and description.\"Edit<\/a><\/li>\n
                      3. If you have a logo, you can put it on the website. To do this:<\/span>\n
                          \n
                        1. Click\u00a0Select\u00a0Image<\/em>\u00a0under Upload your logo<\/i>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                        2. Choose an image from the library or upload a new one.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
                        3. Now click\u00a0Select Image<\/em>\u00a0under\u00a0Site icon<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                        4. Choose an image from the library or upload a new one.\n
                            \n
                          1. If you logo is rectangular – you’d better make a square or round version for this.<\/li>\n
                          2. If your logo is already square or round – just use it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
                          3. Click the arrow in the upper left.<\/li>\n
                          4. Click Save and Publish<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                            I also do not like the black\/white\/red coloring scheme. I’d rather the main accent color was blue. Here’s how to change it:<\/span><\/p>\n

                            7. Click Save and Publish<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                              Now, let’s add some contact information, so that people could find us:<\/span><\/p>\n

                                Finally, I want to disable the sidebar in blog. I think that it adds no value at the business website, while wasting quite a lot of space.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                2. Under Layout<\/em>, Check\u00a0Full-width (no sidebar)<\/em>.\"Check<\/a><\/li>\n

                                  Once you are done setting up the theme to your liking – click on the cross in the upper left<\/p>\n

                                  Step 7. Content creation<\/span><\/h2>\n

                                  Once you have achieved the desired look for your website, you can start creating content pages. For the purposes of this example, let’s create pages Main, News, Our services, Service 1, Service 2<\/em> and About<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                  Practice<\/span><\/h3>\n
                                    \n
                                  1. In the upper left of the Dashboard<\/em>, click Pages<\/em>.<\/li>\n
                                  2. Click Add new<\/em>.\"Pages\"<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
                                  3. Enter the page title, for example Main<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                  4. Fill it with text, images and other content in the simple visual editor. If you know HTML, you can also edit the code by clicking the Text\u00a0<\/em>tab.<\/li>\n
                                  5. To the right, in the\u00a0Template<\/em> field, choose the Full-Width\u00a0<\/em>template.\u00a0This will remove the sidebar from the page.\"Create<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
                                  6. Click Publish<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                    Create other pages the same way. The page\u00a0News<\/i>\u00a0should be empty, since we will move the blog to it. In order to do this:<\/span><\/p>\n

                                    1. In the left sidebar of the Dashboard, click\u00a0Settings<\/em>.<\/li>\n
                                    2. Click\u00a0Reading<\/em>.\"Click<\/a><\/li>\n
                                    3. Under Front page displays<\/em>\u00a0click\u00a0Static Page<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    4. Under Main page<\/em> choose Main<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    5. Under Posts page<\/em> choose News<\/em>.
                                      \n                                      \"Front<\/a><\/li>\n
                                    6. Click\u00a0Save Changes.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                      \n\t

                                      If you do not need a blog, choose \u2014 Choose\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/em>in the step 5. This will completely remove the\u00a0blog from the site.\u00a0<\/span><\/div> <\/p>\n

                                      Now, let’s add those pages to the website’s main menu:<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        \n
                                      1. On the Dasboard, click\u00a0Appearance<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                      2. Click Menus.\"Click<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n
                                      3. Remove all the pages from the current menu. To do this, click on the arrow to the right of the page and click Remove<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                      4. Check all the pages you’ve created in the list on the left and click Add to Menu<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                      5. Rearrange the pages by dragging them around. Drag the pages Service 1 and Service on top of Our Services to make them sub items and turn Our Services in the submenu.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                      6. Click\u00a0Create Menu<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                      7. Check the\u00a0Primary Menu<\/em>\u00a0under\u00a0Display location <\/em>and click\u00a0Save menu<\/em>.\"Click<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                        \n

                                        \"Result\"<\/a>Congratulations \u2014 now you know how to make a real website, with pretty header, blog and widgets! It even looks well on mobile!<\/p>\n

                                        Now all you have to do is to get visitors. I recommend adding your website address to your physical business cards, as well as other types of advertisement. If you plan to make promote your website\u00a0\u2014 I recommend ads in Adwords and social networks. But that’s a whole new area that will require more than once article to cover.<\/p>\n
