In this article, we\u2019ll tell you how to create an online store for a couple of dozens of products on any hosting, that can run WordPress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll be looking at three plugins, each with its own peculiarities. And since the budget is the key in this case, we\u2019ll be looking only at the free or freemium plugins.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t<!-- shortcode box --> <div class=\"shortcode tf_clearfix box  light-blue\">A<b> plugin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is\u00a0an add-on for WordPress, which adds new features to the website. Plugins can do anything: from managing the caching and other internal WordPress processes to transforming your blog into an online store.<\/span><\/div> <!-- \/shortcode box -->\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WooCommerce<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unihost.com\/blog\/minio.php?2017\/06\/DS_160617_bea48e.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/unihost.com\/blog\/minio.php?2017\/06\/DS_160617_bea48e.jpg\" alt=\"Woocommerce is the most popular online store platform\" width=\"1100\" height=\"906\" \/ title=\"Making an online store on WordPress \u2014 fast, for free and on any hosting - Image 1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woocommerce powers 20% of all online stores. The plugin itself is completely free, but its authors are heavily monetizing addons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even without the addons, WooCommerce can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run wholesales.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sell both digital and physical products.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect to PayPal and Swift, as well as many delivery services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calculate the delivery price, basing on the size and weight of the product.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send targeted advertisements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive notifications to the administrator\u2019s e-mail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Display the complete statistics on products, sales and transactions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly all these features are paid in other plugins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WooCommerce also has a convenient and easy to use design, which fits well into the WordPress Dashboard. Plugins comes with a manual, which will show the new user the basics of operating the WooCommerce dashboard and leave them a link to the more advanced manuals. Overall, it takes around an hour to master the basic features of the plugin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On WooCommers addons<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WooCommerce has both official addons and the addons from the third party developers. Addons add new features to the program: pre-orders, membership (with exclusive discounts or even merchandise), subscriptions and many other things. Also, with the addons WooCommerce can connect to other payment methods and delivery services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average price for the addon is $100, but you can find free addons in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/woocommerce.com\/product-category\/woocommerce-extensions\/\" rel=\"nofollow nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosting Requirements for WooCommerce<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WooCommerce is the heaviest plugin in our review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the official requirements, WooCommerce needs at least 64 MB RAM on the hosting. 128 MB is the comfort zone for a small online store.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On practice, you can get by with 40 MB, if the load on your website is easy enough. But if a lot of users access your website simultaneously, it will lag or even crash for awhile.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t<!-- shortcode box --> <div class=\"shortcode tf_clearfix box  light-blue\">To find out how much RAM your hosting offers, contact your tech support.<\/div> <!-- \/shortcode box -->\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WooCommerce is a great solution for ambitious stores. Plugin has no restrictions on the number of products, convenient control panel and a very detailed stats screen. Also, a large number of addons allows to increase your store\u2019s features as it grows.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unihost.com\/blog\/minio.php?2017\/06\/DS_160617_d408af-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1735 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/unihost.com\/blog\/minio.php?2017\/06\/DS_160617_d408af-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ecwid is a cross-platform e-store\" width=\"1017\" height=\"857\" \/ title=\"Making an online store on WordPress \u2014 fast, for free and on any hosting - Image 2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid is a cross-platform online store for WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and other CMS. It comes as a plugin, but in reality it\u2019s a web application that connects to the CMS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid\u2019s dashboard is very intuitive and convenient. It\u2019s even easier to use than the WooCommerce\u2019s one. First 10-15 minutes after the plugin is installed are dedicated to the mandatory tutorial, after which you can start working. Add the new <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">page to your website\u2019s menu, add the products to the catalogue and you can start inviting customers to the website.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On web applications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid is a web application. That means, that your store is located not on the hosting, but on the Ecwid servers. You simply connect it to your website, by creating a special page for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Advantages of web applications:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can create an online store on any website. Ecwid even supports Facebook pages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can easily transfer your store to a different CMS or hosting \u2014 it can be done it literally two clicks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to adjust the hosting settings. Everything is being handled by Ecwid\u2019s admins.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Web applications are strictly connected to the provider. If in the nearest future Ecwid decides to close up shop \u2014 you\u2019ll lose your store. Also, Ecwid can raise their prices or disable some features at any moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid\u2019s limitations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The free version of Ecwid is limited. You can\u2019t include prices for comparison; you can\u2019t include the wholesale prices; you can\u2019t install addons or store themes (although you can write your own CSS); you can\u2019t create discounts and coupons; there\u2019s no extended statistics, warehouse management and abandoned carts tracking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worst is the limitations on the product number \u2014 no more than 10. To lift it up to 100 and remove some of the limitations, you have to pay Ecwid $15\/mo. And the whole functionality comes at $100\/mo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid Addons<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid addons are available through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecwid.com\/apps\" rel=\"nofollow nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid App Store<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In order to install them, you must be on the Venture pricing plan ($15\/mo) or an even higher one. There are a lot of addons and even some of the free ones are useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid Hosting Requirements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecwid is the lightest plugin on this list. The lion\u2019s share of the calculations happens on the Ecwid servers, your hosting just runs a small app that connects it to the store. With Ecwid you don\u2019t need an expensive hosting or a VPS, as long as your subscription is paid for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, if you can run WordPress \u2014 you can run Ecwid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The free version of Ecwid will suit only the smallest of the online stores. On the other hand, if your hosting is pretty weak or you just do not want to learn the more complicated WooCommerce, Ecwid is a decent solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WP eCommerce<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unihost.com\/blog\/minio.php?2017\/06\/screenshot-3-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-877 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/unihost.com\/blog\/minio.php?2017\/06\/screenshot-3-1.png\" alt=\"WP eCommerce store\" width=\"1015\" height=\"477\" \/ title=\"Making an online store on WordPress \u2014 fast, for free and on any hosting - Image 3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WP eCommerce is a popular plugin with a long history. Just like WooCommerce, the plugin itself is free, but the developers heavily monetize the addons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interface is convenient and easy to use. There is no tutorial, but everything is pretty intuitive. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WP eCommerce restrictions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no restrictions per se. You will get everything you\u2019ve been promised on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wpecommerce.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you want something more \u2014 for example, additional pictures for the product or the grid view \u2014 you need an official addon eCommerce Gold Cart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comes at $99, single payment. There is no subscription option.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WP eCommerce hosting requirements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to just get by, WP eCommerce needs 32 MB of RAM. Although, in this case you will be greeted with a warning sign in the Dashboard, asking you to increase the limit to 64 MB ASAP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even on 32 MB of RAM, the store runs pretty well. It won\u2019t handle a large influx of visitors, but it will be enough to make your first steps into the world of the online commerce.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WP eCommerce is an OK solution. It\u2019s very light, convenient and intuitive. But the greater part of the feature list is reserved only for paid users, which is disappointing. Besides, there just aren\u2019t as many addons as there are for WooCommerce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This plugin will be suitable for those, who is not ready to pay for Ecwid subscription or more powerful hosting for WooCommerce.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t<!-- shortcode box --> <div class=\"shortcode tf_clearfix box  light-blue\">If you need a store only in English and you main currency is USD, you should use eCommerce WD instead. It is very similar to WP eCommerce, but the free version is more capable and the upgrade will cost you only $30.<\/div> <!-- \/shortcode box -->\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plugins we can\u2019t recommend<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are dozens of other plugins for making and online store out of WordPress website. But they are either clones of WooCommerce and Ecwid, and not very good ones\u00a0at that, or are not that free at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the free version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy Digital Downloads<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you won\u2019t be able to use any payment processors. How exactly you are supposed to sell digital goods without being able to receive money for them remains a mystery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jigoshop Classic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reached its EoL, while the new and updated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jigoshop eCommerce <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is full of errors. Besides, you will have to bug the support on every possible subject, since the developers haven\u2019t released the documentation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music Store<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an interesting project for\u2026 well, music stores. But the free version doesn\u2019t support albums, has no way to listen to music before buying it and no cart either.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordPress Simple Paypal Shopping Cart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 is a curiosity at best. The price and the product image here are set through the code (which is not really simple already) and there is no catalogue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An online store\u2019s success rarely depends on the plugin that it runs on. The design, pricing, selection and marketing are all much more important. But on the other hand, a good plugin allows you to avoid expenses \u2014 both in time and money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So do not hurry. Check all the plugins you are interested in, give them a test drive and only then make a decision.
