On October 17, 2017, we\u2019ve been graced with a new update to Google Chrome \u2014 the most popular browser in the world, with 44% of the overall Internet userbase. Now Chrome will warn the visitors if your website is not safe \u2014 which scares users off. And by \u00abnot safe\u00bb Google means \u00abdoesn\u2019t have SSL\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t

SSL is a special certificate for the website, which encrypts all the data sent and received via the HTTPS.<\/div> \n

Why you need SSL and why Google hates website without it<\/span><\/h2>\n

The digital security issue has gone global in the last couple of years. Not so long, 150 million of American citizens had their data stolen from Equifax, including the social security numbers. Before that, we\u2019ve had hacks of PSN, Yahoo, Ashley Madison and other companies. And it\u2019s not only a Western issue \u2014 Russia is facing the same problems. <\/span>Acunetfix<\/span><\/a> even published security statistics based on 10 million leaked Yandex accounts. <\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, SSL won\u2019t help if your server is available to every company employee and protected by a login <\/span>admin\u00a0<\/em>and password password<\/em>. But it the very least will protect you from The Man in the Middle \u2014 a type of attack when the hacker intercepts the traffic and uses it in their own goals. Even if the hacker does intercept the SSL encrypted data, they won\u2019t be able to read it without 256-bit keys, which are located only on the website server and in the client\u2019s browser.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abBut I don\u2019t have personal data on my website!\u00bb say those who oppose the mass adoption of SSL. \u00abWhy would Google make me buy the certificate?\u00bb The reason lies in human nature. Most people don\u2019t use unique passwords on every website, so when hackers figure out their password on the catohololics forum, they also get a Facebook password. Or even the one for a bank account.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Google announced a year ago, that it\u2019s going to mark website without SSL as unsafe and actually decrease their search ratings, pushing them off the first few pages of the search results. And now they finally decided to take action.<\/span><\/p>\n

How does the lack of SSL affect the website popularity<\/span><\/h2>\n

HubSpot Research show, that up to 80% of users (depending on demographics and location) will immediately quit the website that has a \u00abNot secure\u00bb sign. And Google made sure that you can\u2019t miss it.\"Not<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Since 44% of Internet users use Chrome, even the most merciful stats show that websites without SSL will lose around 35% of visitors. And that\u2019s not even counting the search ratings hit.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to check if the website is protected via SSL<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are a couple of ways to check if your website is secured via SSL.<\/span><\/p>\n

Via Google Chrome<\/span><\/h3>\n

Just go to the website and look at the address bar. <\/span><\/p>\n

Do you see the green lock and \u00abSecure\u00bb label? That means it\u2019s safe.\"Secure\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

But if you see the red warning sign and or the gray icon, that means the website is not secure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Via other browsers<\/span><\/h3>\n

In Firefox, you can simply go to the website and click <\/span>i <\/span><\/i>in the address field to see the report.\"report\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In other browsers, you should check how does the URL begin. If it starts with <\/span>https:\/\/<\/span><\/i> \u2014 you are secure. If it\u2019s <\/span>http:\/\/ <\/span><\/i>\u2014 there\u2019s no certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see, in my examples the connection is not safe. If you see the same on your website, don\u2019t worry \u2014 you won\u2019t be the first one to completely miss out on Google\u2019s new features. Right now you can see the same \u00abNot secure\u00bb signs on Marvel.com, IMDB.com, StarWars.com and dozens of other top-profile websites.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to install SSL<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you have a webmaster or even just an IT person \u2014 you can task them with it. If you don\u2019t, you\u2019ll have to use manuals:<\/span><\/p>\n
