Now Chrome will warn the visitors if your website is not safe \u2014 which scares users off. And by \u00abnot safe\u00bb Google means \u00abdoesn\u2019t have SSL\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t<!-- shortcode box --> <div class=\"shortcode tf_clearfix box  light-blue\">SSL is a special certificate for the website, which encrypts all the data sent and received via the HTTPS.<\/div> <!-- \/shortcode box -->\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why you need SSL and why Google hates website without it<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The digital security issue has gone global in the last couple of years. Not so long, 150 million of American citizens had their data stolen from Equifax, including the social security numbers. Before that, we\u2019ve had hacks of PSN, Yahoo, Ashley Madison and other companies. And it\u2019s not only a Western issue \u2014 Russia is facing the same problems. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acunetix.com\/blog\/articles\/statistics-leaked-gmail-yandex-mail-ru-passwords\/\" rel=\"nofollow nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acunetfix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even published security statistics based on 10 million leaked Yandex accounts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, SSL won\u2019t help if your server is available to every company employee and protected by a login <\/span><em>admin\u00a0<\/em>and password <em>password<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But it the very least will protect you from The Man in the Middle \u2014 a type of attack when the hacker intercepts the traffic and uses it in their own goals. Most people don\u2019t use unique passwords on every website, so when hackers figure out their password on the catohololics forum, they also get a Facebook password. Or even the one for a bank account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why Google announced a year ago, that it\u2019s going to mark website without SSL as unsafe and actually decrease their search ratings, pushing them off the first few pages of the search results. And now they finally decided to take action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does the lack of SSL affect the website popularity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HubSpot Research show, that up to 80% of users (depending on demographics and location) will immediately quit the website that has a \u00abNot secure\u00bb sign. And that\u2019s not even counting the search ratings hit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to check if the website is protected via SSL<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a couple of ways to check if your website is secured via SSL.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Via Google Chrome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just go to the website and look at the address bar. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you see the green lock and \u00abSecure\u00bb label? If it starts with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 you are secure. If it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/ <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 there\u2019s no certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, in my examples the connection is not safe. If you see the same on your website, don\u2019t worry \u2014 you won\u2019t be the first one to completely miss out on Google\u2019s new features. Right now you can see the same \u00abNot secure\u00bb signs on Marvel.com, IMDB.com, StarWars.com and dozens of other top-profile websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to install SSL<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a webmaster or even just an IT person \u2014 you can task them with it.
