The reasons vary: higher CPU or RAM requirements, storage expansion, replacement of aging components, or migration to a newer server platform. In this case, the customer needed to upgrade the existing server hardware while keeping the current services and data intact. The main objective was straightforward – replace the underlying hardware without turning the upgrade into a full infrastructure rebuild. The Unihost support team assisted with the hardware upgrade, adjusted the server configuration after the change, and tested the environment before returning it to normal operation.

Technical Challenge

A hardware upgrade can be very simple or significantly more complex depending on how much of the existing environment changes. If the operating system, storage layout, and server architecture remain compatible, the fastest option is often to move the existing disks to the new hardware. In that scenario, the operating system and customer data remain on the same storage devices, while CPU, RAM, motherboard, networking, or other server components are replaced. However, this approach is not always possible.

A more complex migration may be required when:

the operating system is being changed;

the new server uses a different storage configuration;

disks cannot be physically transferred;

the migration is performed between remote data centers;

the customer is moving to a different server platform;

data must be transferred over the network.

In those cases, the upgrade becomes a combined hardware migration and data migration project. The challenge is no longer simply replacing components. The team must also make sure that the operating system, applications, storage, network configuration, and services operate correctly in the new environment.

Choosing the Migration Method

The first step was to determine whether the existing storage could be preserved. There are generally two practical approaches.

Option 1: Move the Existing Disks

When the new hardware is compatible with the existing storage, the simplest migration path often looks like this: old server, power down, move existing disks, install them in the new server, adjust configuration if required, boot and validate services. This approach minimizes data transfer and usually reduces migration complexity. The operating system, applications, and customer data remain on the same disks. However, even a direct disk transfer may require configuration changes if the new hardware uses different network interfaces, storage controllers, boot modes, CPU architecture or platform settings and device names. For that reason, the migration still requires validation before the upgraded system is considered production-ready.

Option 2: Network-Based Data Migration

If the existing disks cannot be transferred, the data must be migrated to the new server. A typical process becomes: existing server, preparing new infrastructure, installing and configuring OS, synchronizing application data, migrating databases, transfer configuration, performing final synchronization, switching services to the new server. This method requires more preparation because the new system must be able to run the customer’s applications before the final cutover. For large datasets, transfer time and available network bandwidth also become important factors.

What the Unihost Team Did

Reviewed the existing environment

Before changing the hardware, the support team reviewed the server configuration and identified the components and services that needed to remain operational after the upgrade. The review included: storage configuration, operating system, boot configuration, network settings, installed services, application dependencies and data location. This made it possible to determine whether a direct disk transfer or data migration was the more appropriate approach.

Prepared the new hardware

The required components were installed and the upgraded server platform was prepared for the existing workload. Where necessary, the hardware configuration was adjusted to match the requirements of the current environment.

Performed the migration

Where storage compatibility allowed it, existing disks could be transferred to the upgraded server. For migrations involving a new operating system or remote hardware, data could instead be transferred across the network. The migration sequence was planned to avoid unnecessary interruption of production services.

Adjusted the system configuration

After the hardware change, the support team checked and corrected configuration differences introduced by the new platform. This included areas such as network interface configuration, storage devices, boot settings, service dependencies, system configuration affected by hardware changes. The goal was to preserve the customer’s existing service environment rather than force the customer to rebuild applications simply because the physical server had changed.

Tested the upgraded environment

Before completing the work, the team verified that the upgraded server was functioning correctly. The checks included: operating system boot, storage availability, network connectivity, application services, databases (where applicable), existing customer services. Only after the environment had been validated was the upgrade considered complete.

Why Migration Planning Matters

Hardware replacement itself is usually not the most complicated part of a server upgrade. The larger risk is everything attached to it. A new server may introduce differences in network hardware, boot configuration, storage controllers, disk identifiers, operating system drivers and storage topology. Without proper preparation, a simple hardware upgrade can therefore turn into an unexpected outage.

Planning the migration path in advance helps determine:

whether the existing disks can be reused;

whether the operating system needs to be rebuilt;

how much data must be transferred;

how long the migration window may take;

which services require additional testing afterward.

Preserving Existing Services

One of the main goals of the upgrade was to avoid unnecessary changes at the application level. The customer did not need a new application architecture simply because the underlying server had been upgraded. Where possible, the existing services, applications, data, system configuration and operational workflows were preserved. This reduced both migration risk and the amount of work required from the customer’s own technical team.

Result

The hardware upgrade was completed while preserving the customer’s existing services and data. The infrastructure was moved to the upgraded server platform without requiring an unnecessary rebuild of the application environment. Where configuration changes were required because of the new hardware, they were implemented and tested as part of the migration. The result was an updated infrastructure platform with the customer’s familiar services preserved and no unplanned downtime caused by the hardware transition.

Results at a glance: server hardware upgraded, existing data preserved, services retained, configuration adjusted for new hardware, migration validated before production use, no unplanned downtime.

Initial situation As infrastructure grows, server hardware eventually needs to be upgraded.
