What servers do I need to run a node?
Unihost offers you a choice of 2 types of servers: VPS and Dedicated Server (DS). First of all, we need to understand what these abbreviations are and why they are needed at all. Let’s start with what a server is. Server is a special computer device that performs certain tasks on the Linux platform. Usually rented servers are used to install nodes and the plus is that they are immediately configured and ready to work.
VPS servers are the most common use that is suitable in most cases to run nodes. This type of server is part of a powerful physical computer that is distributed at the operating system level to dedicated servers with limited power, such as 2 CPUs / 4 RAM / 100 SSDs. The cost of such servers can start from $5/month and end up at about $300-$400/month.
DS – a full-fledged separate physical server, which resembles your computer. It works in the data centre of the hosting provider. This is the most expensive and productive option for renting a server. DS will allow you to raise heavy nodes validators (like solana) or independently “slice” it into a VPS to raise small nodes. This will allow you to save colossal money on renting servers, but on the condition that you will have 10 nodes and more working there. Because in nodes you need to adhere to the golden rule, which reads as follows: ‘for each node, you need to take a separate server’.
